MEXICO MACABRO PRESENTS: 50 YEARS OF LA MANSIÓN DE LA LOCURA

50 years later, Macabro revisits the first film directed by Juan López Moctezuma, one of the most memorable in the genre's Mexican filmography. "La mansión de la locura" is considered one of the strangest adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's work and a unique piece of baroque horror.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES: "SATÁNICO" EXHIBITION BY LORE MARTELL

As part of the special activities of Macabro XXII, the exhibition "Satánico" by Mexican artist Lore Martell will be presented, made up of a series of 16 photographs inspired by Mexican horror cinema. The exhibition can be visited at the Casa del Cine (República de Uruguay 52, Centro Histórico de la Cdad. de México, Centro, Cuauhtémoc, CDMX), from August 17 to 27, 2023.

"When I was a girl I saw Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky at my grandfather's house and it changed my life. I didn't understand much of what I had witnessed, but it awakened something inside me, a fascination with surreal and macabre imagery. I sought out more "weird" movies and soon developed a deep love for the horror genre. "Satánico" pays homage to the films that inspired me as an artist. Because my work exists at the crossroads of photography and digital painting, and I think it represents the films that live in my head, this exhibition takes me back to my roots. I tried to capture the way these classic Mexican films made me feel the first time I saw them. I hope that when you see these images, they also unleash a world of dark wonders in your imagination."

About Lore Martell

"My work focuses on creating characters with deformed features that reflect despair and suffering, witches and monsters. The world hidden from our mortal eyes. The terrifying, the strange, fears, and death. My main inspirations are horror cinema, gothic culture, and body horror."

Born and raised in San Luis Potosí, Lore Martell studied at the Instituto Potosino de Bellas Artes, at the Escuela Estatal de Artes Plásticas, and at the Centro de las Artes Bicentenario. In 2018 she held her first solo exhibition, titled "Excisión" (La Casa de las Bóvedas, Centro Cultural, San Luis Potosí), followed by a group exhibition dedicated to William Mortensen titled "Transmutations: Witches, Healers and Oracles" (2021, Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magic in Cleveland, Ohio) and later another solo exhibition, "The New Flesh" (2022, Centro de las Artes Bicentenario, San Luis Potosí). Lore created original images for Violeta García Sinestro's horror anthology book (2019, Clara Beter), and has appeared in several articles about her work, most recently in a 2023 issue of the international horror magazine Rue Morgue. Her art has won multiple photography awards, notably first place in the horror photography contest at the Festival Terrorificamente Cortos 2020 (Palencia, Spain), for "Tres Brujas," and the (2021) Photo3 award in Palencia, Spain, for images that were part of an exhibition at the Centro Cultural Lecrác.

Lore currently also works as a tattoo artist in San Luis Potosí, where she lives with several cats, a dog, and a life-size plastic skeleton named Carmela.

MACABRO TRAINING

Workshop: "From Screenplay to Film"

As part of the Macabro XXII program, Macabro and Macabro Lab invite you to the workshop taught by Fabián Forte: "From Screenplay to Film," which covers everything from the initial idea for the project, developing the literary screenplay, structuring the shooting schedule, and how to work on the technical script while keeping the schedule's timing in mind. The workshop includes a screening of the films "El muerto cuenta su historia" and "La corporación," directed by Fabián Forte. Activity held in collaboration with Centro Cultural CECCANN.

Days: August 21 and 22, 2023, from 5 pm to 10 pm.

Fabián Forte is an Argentine director, assistant director, and screenwriter recognized as one of the most important and representative filmmakers of the Latin American fantasy film movement in this century. Fabián has presented films at Macabro such as "Malditos sean," "El muerto cuenta su historia," and "La corporación," and he will be back in Mexico for #MacabroXXII to give an intensive workshop for those interested in getting started in creating horror genre films.
