WHEN HELL IS FULL, THE DEAD WILL WALK THE EARTH

Ten years ago at Macabro, we paid a rather unusual tribute to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Night of the Living Dead. This year, Romero's classic will reach its landmark 50th anniversary, so we've revived a piece by Casandra Vicario, published in the catalog of our seventh edition (2008), to celebrate it. We're also sharing a video made by an attendee of that screening, projected on 16mm, with fun and terrifying images from the celebration.

Night of the Living Dead undoubtedly marked the beginning of a new era in horror cinema. Although gore had already been born, George A. Romero not only opened the door to a brutal, claustrophobic, bloody cinema that was critical of its surroundings, but also gave force and brutality to the genre started by Gordon Lewis, breathing more life than ever—paradoxical as it may sound—into the figure of the zombie. A monster that devours human flesh and blood, one that has never stopped walking the earth of cinema since, splattering us with the vital red liquid that runs through our veins.

Released on October 2, 1968, Romero's debut feature has been given countless social and political readings, racism included, of course. However, one of the film's great virtues is that it was made with the goal of entertaining the masses. All of this in glorious black and white.

With a girl who kills her own mother, a hero killed at the hands of his own human race, a horde of the living dead who, for no apparent reason, terrorize humanity, and an ending that left more than one viewer in shock. Romero left us a film that is unique in its genre, valuable to fans of horror cinema and important to the world of film.

Cruel, dark, brilliant, bloody, scandalous, brutal, creative, addictive, scandalous, inquisitive, wonderful, important, claustrophobic, human, terrifying, beautiful, and classic. All of this is Night of the Living Dead.

Bloody and Terrifying Anniversary.
