The Horror 2020 Will Bring Us

Welcome, everyone, to 2020 — new year, new terrors — and in the next few lines we'll tell you about some of the horror films that will make this year a bit more fun and enjoyable. Ready? Here we go…

We're starting off with an amputated foot on January 1st, with the Mexican premiere of “The Lighthouse” (El Faro) by Robert Eggers, a much-anticipated film for genre fans who were left with a great taste in their mouths after enjoying this director's debut feature: “The Witch”. The Lighthouse tells the story of two lighthouse keepers working together on a mysterious island in New England, starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. If you haven't seen it, there's still time.

One of the most anticipated films for 2020 is the third installment in the Conjuring saga, “The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It”, this time the Warrens introduce us to the case of Bill Ramsey, a man whose story lies somewhere between demonic possession and lycanthropy. This film is directed by Michael Chaves, whom we recently saw on the big screen with “The Curse of la Llorona”.

The next one has me really excited, no doubt about it — based on Henry Irving's classic “The Turn of the Screw” and directed by Floria Sigismondi, a new version of this classic ghost story arrives in 2020, now titled “The Turning”. Floria Sigismondi is a photographer and celebrated music video director who has worked with Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Incubus, Interpol, The White Stripes, David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, The Cure, Björk, and Marilyn Manson.

Coming soon to Mexican theaters is “Underwater”, by William Eubank, whose Spanish title looks like it will be “Amenaza en lo Profundo”, and it stars Vincent Cassel and Kristen Stewart. An earthquake leaves an underground laboratory devastated; the survivors try to find a way out, but face unknown threats.

Jeff Wadlow, whose directing credits include “Kick Ass 2” and “Truth or Dare,” was chosen to direct “Fantasy Island”, a terrifying take on a famous 1970s TV show, set on a magical island.

This year we'll get to see the sequel to “The Boy”, this time starring Katie Holmes, titled “Brahms. The Boy II”, directed by William Brent Bell, who also directed the first installment. The story centers on a family that moves into a mansion, ignoring the macabre history surrounding the place; soon, the youngest member of the family makes a new friend: a human-shaped doll named… Brahms.

The next one is a film that I personally think will be one of the best of 2020: “Invisible Man” starring Elisabeth Moss, who plays Cecilia, a woman rebuilding her life after the death of her abusive boyfriend — but strange occurrences make her think he might not be as dead as they say. The most powerful thing about this film is the direction by Leigh Whannell, who — besides being the screenwriter of the first installment of “Saw”, and its co-star (remember Adam?) — also wrote the screenplay for the next two installments of that saga, was the screenwriter of Insidious and director of “Upgrade. Máquina Asesina”.

Other films also awaiting us this year include “A quiet Place 2” once again directed by John Krasinski. “Gretel & Hansel” by Oz Perkins, and James Wan will surely make us suffer with his new film “Malignant”. Edgar Wright, to whom we owe the classic “Shaun of the Dead” brings us this year “Last Night in Soho”.

In October, David Gordon Green brings us “Halloween Kills”, the sequel to the 2018 version of “Halloween” once again starring Jamie Lee Curtis. The cannibals who kill tourists on the highway are back in “Wrong Turn: The Foundation” by Mike P. Nelson, and this year we'll also see the remake of “The Witches” by Robert Zemeckis, based on the story by Roald Dahl.

So there's no excuse to be bored in 2020 — enjoy these and other upcoming premieres, have a great scare, and have a good time.
