Macabre Monday: cult horror cinema on YouTube

Without subscriptions and without needing to use Hola.org, watching horror movies on YouTube has the huge downside that they don't look very good but, well, they're free, and in the vast majority of cases they're films you can't buy on Amazon or rent at Blockbuster, in fact, many are uploaded by horror or B-movie fans themselves.

Here are a few quick suggestions to check out,

Deathwatch.- With a cast led by Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings and the award-winning remakes of Planet of the Apes) this film, in which a supernatural entity stalks a platoon, deserved more fame because it's actually pretty decent and nobody paid it much attention when it came out.

The Hitcher.- A true classic of serial-killer cinema, and the other great role where Rutger Hauer shows just howcreepy he can be (the first and most important would be the replicant Nexus 6 who gives a hard time to Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, of course.)

The Crazies.- Not as famous as his living-dead series, The Crazies is, along with Martin, one of the great forgotten classics of Romero, a multifaceted director whom fans tend to pigeonhole. This version is also much more worth watching than its remake, consider yourselves warned.

The Boogeyman.- Extremely low-budget, with a script that's more interesting than well-executed, The Boogeyman is one of the films made by director Uli Lommel with his gorgeous wife, Suzanna Love, and it's worth watching if only for the spectacular soundtrack and some of the ideas it puts forward.

Maniac.- Here it's the opposite: the remake is also worth watching, and it's one of those rare cases where the recommendation is to watch both films and buy both soundtracks (the original is by Jay Chattaway and the most recent one by Rob.) William Lustig, the director, later found fame thanks to Maniac Cop and its sequels.
