#Noticias: The Genre Cinema Manual Arrives in Latin America

The book compiles 80 accounts from the region's horror, science-fiction, and action film production.

On October 13, 2015, the "Genre Cinema Manual. Experiences of the Audiovisual Guerrilla in Latin America" was presented for the first time (https://www.facebook.com/ManualCineDeGenero (abre en nueva pestaña)) at the LibrArte Fair in Berazategui, Buenos Aires province.

The presentation was led by the compilers, Hernán Moyano and Carina Rodríguez, and drew a full house. They were introduced by the heads of the Municipality's Audiovisual Productions department, Ivana Roma and Mariano Hueter.

"Completing the publication of the Genre Cinema Manual is a dream come true. The parallel work of countless Latin American filmmakers, contemporaries of one another who lived through similar experiences, made it necessary to have a physical record to share it," said Hernán Moyano during the presentation.

"This first book on the subject is an indicator of the enormous potential of the region's audiovisual production. It's useful not only for directors who are just starting out, but also for shining a light on the growing number of horror, science-fiction, action, fantasy, and suspense films being made, films that are putting Latin America on the world map of genre cinema production," added Carina Rodríguez.

About the book

The book "Genre Cinema Manual. Experiences of the Audiovisual Guerrilla in Latin America" (https://www.facebook.com/ManualCineDeGenero (abre en nueva pestaña)) compiles these experiences and many more. It comprises 80 articles by directors from 14 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela, plus contributions from Spain and the United States.

Its first edition was published by Fan Ediciones (http://www.facebook.com/fan.ediciones (abre en nueva pestaña)) in Argentina and was launched on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at the LibrArte Fair (http://www.berazategui.gov.ar/cultura/). Presentations have also already been scheduled at the Mar del Plata Film Festival (http://www.mardelplatafilmfest.com/es/), Blood Window (http://www.bloodwindow.com/ (abre en nueva pestaña)) at Ventana Sur, the Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre Festival (http://rojosangre.quintadimension.com/2.0/), the La Nave de los Sueños series (http://www.naveonline.com.ar/ (abre en nueva pestaña)) at the Biblioteca Nacional, and the Córdoba International Horror Film Showcase (http://www.facebook.com/MuestraTerrorCordoba).

The book features contributions from renowned genre filmmakers: Argentines Andrés Muschietti and Pablo Parés; Cubans Jorge Molina and Alejandro Brugués; Colombians Felipe and Esteban Orozco; Uruguayans Gustavo Hernández and Gustavo Rojo; Brazilians Felipe Guerra and Rodrigo Aragão; Venezuelan Alejandro Hidalgo; Chilean Pablo Illanés; Paraguayans Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori; and Mexicans Isaac Ezban and Gigi Saul Guerrero, among others. All the articles are written in the first person: each author recounts how they got their start, which films they worked on, in what role, and what advice they'd give to those just starting out.

Likewise, the "Genre Cinema Manual" features forewords by renowned American film critic Maitland McDonagh of the New York Times, Argentine producer Axel Kutchevatzsky, and Argentine journalist Diego Curubeto. The region's leading fantastic-film festivals, crowdfunding pioneers, and specialists in special effects, sound design, distribution, and exhibition also took part.

The compilers are Hernán Moyano, director and producer at PauraFlics and Cut to the Chase, and Carina Rodríguez, author of the book Horror Cinema in Argentina: Production, Distribution, Exhibition, and Market, journalist and content editor at ULTRACINE, and professor and researcher at the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (UNQ).
