WHAT'S COMING IN 2018?: The Most Anticipated Releases

By Casandra Vicario.

Well, the year is coming to an end, and with it, our hopes of seeing more horror films in movie theaters here in Mexico. But the good news is that a new year will begin very soon, and many films will show up to unsettle and delight our senses, thirsty for horror.

We start the year with the release (we still don't know if it will be worldwide) of another installment in the “Insidious” saga, now with “Insidious. The Last Key”, directed by Adam Robitel, director of “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014) and “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” (2015).

In this new installment, we'll join parapsychologist Elise Rainier (Lyn Shaye) as she faces a new paranormal adventure that takes place in what was once her home.

Another interesting film is “Winchester”, starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke. This film is based on the story of what is considered the “most haunted mansion in the world”—yes, you read that right—a house built with secret passageways and hallways that lead nowhere…. What's behind this house? We'll find out soon, very soon.

Do you remember that movie where Liv Tyler is stalked by masked figures? Well, for 2018, we'll get a new installment of “The Strangers,” now titled “The Strangers: Prey at Night”.

It's directed by the English filmmaker Johannes Roberts, who a few weeks ago released “47 Meters Down” in Mexican theaters. Was a new installment of this 2008 story really necessary? We're looking forward to the release.

One of the most interesting films of the year, since there has been a lot of talk about the figure of “Slenderman”, is the film of the same name, which, directed by Syvain White, will hit the big screen next year.

You don't know who “Slenderman” is? Well, basically he's a fictional character—very tall and thin, dressed in a suit, with no facial features—who has been credited with a great number of myths and legends, which have led to him being considered “the first great myth of the web.”

This summer, “The Conjuring” universe will get a new story: it's “The Nun”, directed by Corin Hardy, with Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons in the lead roles—and it's worth noting the participation of Mexican actor Demián Bichir as Father Burke.

And, although it will probably not reach commercial theaters, in 2018 we'll get a new installment in the “Hellraiser” saga; this time the title is “Hellraiser Judgment”, directed and written by Gary J. Tunnicliffe, who is mostly known for special effects work rather than directing, and whose work we've seen in films like “Pulse” (2006), “Fest” (2005), and “Gone Girl” (2014). And no, unfortunately for us, Doug Bradley, our Pinhead, won't be in this installment, so honestly, without him, I don't think it's worth watching much.

And well, that's a bit of what awaits us in 2018 when it comes to horror films—get ready for this cinematic feast!
