Viernes Macabro: the best horror comics

When you think of horror, movies and books come first, then maybe a soundtrack or podcast(Anything Ghost (abre en nueva pestaña) is amazing, for example) and, for whatever reason, comics are relegated to a truly sorry last place, even though some of them could definitely make you sleep with the lights on.

And we're not talking about The Walking Dead which, sure, is great, but it won't scare the crap out of you; no, we're talking about books that are really doing important things with horror as a genre that permeates nearly every art form (there's horror theater — all that's missing is a horror ballet to have representation everywhere.)

So, here are the comics that have scared the crap out of us at night:

The Wytches.- A true story about witches, no apologies, no attempt whatsoever to soften the comic's brutal content. A truly chilling vision of the supernatural. You can find it on Comixology (abre en nueva pestaña).

Locke & Key.- Written by Joe Hill, son of a certain Stephen King and quite a force to be reckoned with in the world of comics. Locke & Key plays with one of the most traditionally creepy elements in the horror repertoire: kids + ghosts, and it pulls it off pretty well — in fact, it's one of the most addictive series out there. It's sold digitally on Amazon/Comixology

Afterlife with Archie.- The reinvention of Archie, who went from being the biggest nerd in all of the United States, to having a truly rough time because of the zombie dog belonging to Jughead (Sabrina brings him back from the dead using the Necronomicon,) is one of the great twists in comic book history, and this new chapter is well worth reading. The Upturned Stone.- A group of kids eat the biggest pumpkin in the forest, the very one that grew where the town's lifeless boy was found, and somehow they absorb the residue of the crime that killed him, forcing them to avenge it. TERRIFYING. It only exists in hardcover on Amazon (abre en nueva pestaña).

Neonomicon.- Comic legend Alan Moore gives us a new visit to the universe of H.P. Lovecraft with this revisiting of the characters made famous by the genius of supernatural horror. This series, EXCLUSIVELY for adults (available for purchase on Comixology (abre en nueva pestaña),) brings back our lord Chtulhu and his minions (among them Dagon, one that nobody remembers.) A great series, very successful at updating these classics.
