13 MUTILATIONS AND EXTREME SCENES WORTH WATCHING.

October is here, and that lovely date we love so much will soon arrive: Halloween! For this reason, at Macabro we decided to revisit some articles to celebrate the occasion. This time we present an article by Casandra Vicario listing, in no particular order, 13 mutilations and extreme scenes worth watching.

1.- DEATH BY BASKETBALL. Without a doubt, one of the crudest, most absurd, and funniest deaths ever seen on screen, found in Wes Craven's “Deadly Friend”: a young woman kills an old lady with a basketball—literally…and best of all, the body walks several steps before collapsing to the ground.

2.-HEAD EXPLOSION. A classic among gore lovers—there are even posters featuring this sequence—found in David Cronenberg's classic “Scanners.” One of the protagonists uses his mental powers to make a man's head explode; if this film had been shot in 3D, the audience would have ended up drenched in blood.

3.- HEAD EXPLOSION. Yes, exploding heads are indeed a recurring thing in horror films, and this one couldn't be left off the list since it's both performed and created by special-effects maestro Tom Savini. It appears in William Lustig's “Maniac,” where Savini's character loses his head after taking a shotgun blast.

4.- SKINNED. Well then, let's leave the headless bodies behind and move on to a rough scene from T.F. Mou's “Men Behind the Sun,” in which a woman's hands are frozen, then plunged into hot water, after which the skin is simply pulled off, leaving the bone exposed. Don't try this at home.

5.- DEATH BY MACHINE. From Eli Craig's “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil”: a wood chipper that shreds lumber into little pieces is running, a guy closes in on one of the protagonists armed with a small knife, but the other bends down to pick up some wood, and then guess what…the poor guy falls into the machine and ends up in very bad shape, splattering a few of his buddies in the process.

6.- BEATING. Not everything is pretty for Hollywood's biggest stars: Jessica Alba takes a brutal beating (one of several) in Michael Winterbottom's “The Killer Inside Me,” a scene that starts with some sweet kisses, moves on to slaps, and then escalates to punches, kicks, and more. Did we mention that while this is happening, both of them keep saying they love each other?

7.- DEVOURED BY PIRANHAS. An excellent and entertaining film, especially for gore lovers, is Frenchman Alexandre Aja's “Piranha 3D.” Of all the ways to die that parade through the movie, the one that earned a spot on this list is the death of Derrick Jones, a young porn producer whose “best body part” gets eaten by the piranhas first, after which they devour the rest of his body from the waist down.

8.- EATEN BY LIONS. Taken from the 1975 film “Hombres Salvajes, Bestias Salvajes,” a documentary-style movie in which we watch Pete Dunich get devoured by lionesses while, right in front of him in a car, sit his wife and two young children. The lions chew and guard their meal, savoring it—and they love it!

9.- MISSING HALF A HEAD. Another unmissable scene is in Adam Green's “Hatchet,” in which Victor Crowley, the film's monster, catches up to one of his victims, sticks his fingers in her mouth, and tears off half her head. The sound is brutal, and so is the blood spray. What's left of the body is the lower jaw and below, and the rest…scattered somewhere around.

10.- DEATH IN THE SNOW. Imagine you're out in the snow and a pack of uniformed zombies is chasing you. As fate would have it, you wound one of them, but another attacks, and you both fall into a ravine along with the zombie. But the guts of the other monster, not yet finished off, work as a rope and leave you dangling—and of course, right then the other passenger you're carrying with you bites you, and well… goodbye, cruel world… (Oh, and this happens in Tommy Wirkola's “Dead Snow”!!)

11.- DEATH BY DRILL. In Lucio Fulci's “City of the Living Dead,” we get to enjoy a scene in which a man's head is drilled straight through from one side to the other, while the pain, the screams, and the blood are all very much present. Brutal.

12.- BLED OUT. In "I Spit on Your Grave," our protagonist seduces one of the bad guys, gets into the bathtub, and cuts off the very thing that identifies him as a man… ouch!

13.-TORN TO PIECES. This is a classic Clive Barker film—we're talking, of course, about "Hellraiser"—and that terrible, magnificent ending in which Frank's entire body is pierced by harpoons until it literally bursts, not before wetting his lips with his tongue and uttering words that will surely go down in horror-film history: "Jesus wept."
