Mexico City, June 2025.- As part of its 24th edition, Macabro: Mexico City International Horror Film Festival presents a series of parallel activities that recognize and champion national and international talent, reaffirming its role as a leading name in Latin American horror cinema. Beyond a rich and diverse program, the festival pays tribute to the legacy of Mexican fantasy cinema, promotes the digital preservation of the genre, and creates space for alternative art with innovative proposals that keep the spirit of horror on screen alive and constantly evolving.

These activities range from the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) to a new alliance with Wikimedia and a standout exhibition of art toys and illustration. True to its spirit, Macabro recognizes and champions genre creators every year, and this edition will be no exception. Below, we present three initiatives that will enrich the festival experience and expand its universe beyond the screen.

Fantastic Films from the CCC: A tribute to half a century of fantasy cinema

As part of the 50th anniversary of the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), one of the most renowned film schools in Mexico and the world, Macabro presents a special retrospective of fantasy cinema made by CCC graduates. The showcase will include short films and feature films that are part of the genre's contemporary history, with works by filmmakers such as Edgar Nito, Jorge Michel Grau, Michelle Garza, Fernando Urdapilleta, Emilio Portes, and Busi Cortés, among others.

This selection will be part of the classics section and will also be part of the Mexico Macabro 2025 circuit, which will tour five states across the country.

Macabro + Wikimedia Edit-a-thon: Building horror's digital memory

Starting this year, MACABRO and Wikimedia are forming an alliance to hold several “edit-a-thons” (marathons for editing articles on the Wikipedia site), to upload or correct articles about horror cinema. The first one will take place during the festival to edit entries on standout films that have screened over the festival's 24-year history. Anyone interested in taking part in the “Edit-a-thon” will be able to do so through an open call that will be announced, and those selected will take part in an editing workshop led by Wikimedia.

Art Toys Exhibition “La Muerte Toy Show 2 The Reborning”

As part of the activities running alongside the film screenings, Macabro presents, in collaboration with Marva Toys —an Art Toys store founded by Marva, leader of the national and international community of artists and creators known as El Fucking Hype— an exhibition that highlights the work of independent artists: toy artists, illustrators, graffiti artists, and tattoo artists.

This time, Marva presents the second edition of the international exhibition “La Muerte Toy Show”, originally held in 2023. This artistic showcase, framed around the Day of the Dead festivities, brings together 50 creators: 22 international artists from countries such as Argentina, Germany, the United Kingdom, Dubai, the United States, Spain, Malaysia, Japan, Ecuador, and Venezuela, and 28 Mexican artists.

The exhibition brings together two main forms of expression: the Art Toy or designer toy, and illustration, creating a unique dialogue between tradition and contemporary art.

This exhibition will run from August 21 to 31 at Casa del Cine.

MACABRO, the Mexico City International Horror Film Festival, will take place from August 19 to 31 this year at various venues across the Mexican capital, bringing the best of genre cinema to fans. It will also feature a series of activities, presentations, gatherings, and talks for all audiences.
