MACABRO FICH PRESENTS THE IMAGE AND PREVIEWS OF ITS 2016 EDITION #MACABROXV

• Retrospectives of German filmmaker Cristoph Schlingensief and Tijuana-born Abraham Sánchez will be presented.
• #MacabroXV will take place from August 23 to 31, 2016, and its opening will be held at the Teatro de la Ciudad “Esperanza Iris”.

Mexico City, June 14, 2016. Macabro International Horror Film Festival of Mexico City presents the artwork for its fifteenth edition — the macabre quinceañera — created by the art and design team made up of Roxana Deneb Ruíz and Diego Álvarez, who have worked on the festival's image for ten consecutive years.

In the coming days, the #MacabroXV spot will be released, directed by Sharon Toribio and starring Irene Repeto, Fernando Huerta Zamacona, Osvaldo Patlán, and Hebzoariba Hernández; the short film will depict the preparations of four classic characters from dark Mexican legends as they get ready to attend Macabro's XV anniversary celebration. The production was supported by the companies CTT and ARTEC, and executive production was by Edna Campos, director of Macabro FICH.

Schlingensief Retrospective

This year, Macabro FICH and the Goethe Institute, as part of the Mexico-Germany dual year, present a retrospective of controversial film and theater director Cristoph Schlingensief, made up of films such as Egomania, Terror 2000, 100 Jahre Adolf Hitler, Muters Mask and his most recognized foray into genre cinema, the political and ultra-gore parody of La Masacre de Texas, Das Deutsche kattensägen Massaker.

Schlingensief's filmmaking techniques — he was also a visual artist and essayist — illustrate an aesthetic faithful to the celebrated German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder: the tendency to base the treatment of a particular subject on a sudden idea or an occasional topic, the anarchy of dramatic forms, and the spontaneity of acting through a recreation of everyday reality with a disturbing tendency toward aggressiveness. Imitation and irritation take on key significance here. The goal is to find the most direct path to a singular, unrepeatable occurrence, which consequently takes on a theatrical character. Schlingensief's films are personal and political statements of the moment in which they were created.

Schlingensief, who died of lung cancer in 2010, is considered one of the most prominent artists of the German avant-garde and a national icon.

Emerging Horror: Abraham Sánchez

Macabro FICH will dedicate an early retrospective in its emerging horror section to Mexican filmmaker Abraham Sánchez, a native of Tijuana, who has been working in fantasy and horror film since 2005, starting with his first short film Podofagus, screened in cities such as Miami, Venezuela, and Chile. In 2009, the sequel Antropofagus, was screened at the Cineteca Nacional de la Ciudad de México and won the Jury Award at the Freak Film Festival in Valencia, Spain.

In 2011, his next short film, the story of a vampire hunter, Sanguijuelas was an Official Selection at the Mórbido Horror Film Festival, San Diego Comic Con, the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival, and the Feratum Film Festival, and it also won the award for Best Mexican Short Film at the 2013 Macabro Film Festival.

In 2014, he took part in the Macabro Lab screenplay development and mentoring workshop at the 2014 Macabro Film Festival, winning post-production support for his mid-length film set in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world, Devastación (2015) in Mexico City, which will premiere at the 2016 edition of Macabro FICH.

He is currently working as a producer on the short film Hambre (2016) and as director of a segment based on the Tijuana legend of Juan Soldado for the anthology MÉXICO BÁRBARO II.

Cineteca Nacional, Cinematógrafo del Chopo, Casa del Cine, Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Museo Panteón de San Fernando, Museo Archivo de la Fotografía, Faro de Oriente, Faro Tláhuac, Faro Milpa Alta, and Faro Indios Verdes.

The opening will be held at the Teatro de la Ciudad “Esperanza Iris” and the closing at the Museo de la Ciudad de México.

Other venues include a circuit of the city's cineclubs and IEMS high schools.

Macabro XV will take place from August 23 to 31, 2016.
