Mexico City, June 26, 2016. Macabro International Horror Film Festival of Mexico City presents the artwork for its sixteenth edition. This time inspired by Tarot, where Macabro's well-known mascot represents El Arcano, carrying a small reproduction of himself.

Macabro dedicates its image to religious horror, as well as its retrospectives addressing the theme of satanic possession, all of which can be enjoyed in the screening rooms of Cinematógrafo del Chopo, the Museo Archivo de Fotografía, the Museo Panteón de San Fernando, and the FAROS circuit.

Retrospectives

This year's thematic retrospectives focus on films that show a broader spectrum of possession in horror cinema, such as the Polish film “The Dybbuk,” about a possession in a Jewish community, Andrej Zulawski's classic “Possession,” and the classic starring Joan Fontaine, “The Witches.” Likewise, some titles that will be part of the post-apocalyptic horror retrospective include “Panic in Year Zero” by Ray Millandy and the New Zealand film “The Quiet Earth.”

Zombie Roundtable

Macabro will hold a roundtable dedicated to zombie horror in literature: "Living Corpses: The Undead as Seen in Mexican Literature", moderated by fellow writer Iván Farías.

  • Los no muertos by James Nuño

It portrays the fears and insecurities of a generation that watches, frightened, as the rules they were raised with no longer apply.

  • Apocalipsis zombi: La pesadilla está por comenzar by José Noé Mercado. The zombie pandemic and chaos have spread; in the Mexican District, a destructive wave that seems to have no end prevails, one in which time itself has faded away.
  • Habsburgo by Omar Delgado

What happened that night? You will surely wonder, as I myself wonder some early mornings. We, as mere men, happened to witness something that is only seen in myths, something that only people of the stature of Juárez or Maximilian have the greatness to play a leading role in. Something that, within our limited capacity, we can judge, weigh, or even narrate, but never fully comprehend in all its complexity. That, my dear poet, only the Great Architect can do.

Workshop for children presented by the Sociedad Macabritos

Children have a natural fascination with the horror genre. Fear is exciting, fun, and stimulates the imagination in a very special way. The purpose of the workshop Sociedad Macabritos: Film your horror story, is to talk with the children about the genre, covering it in a general way so that, in a hands-on manner, they invent their own horror story, which they will later bring to life in a puppet short film they make themselves.

Taught by Jorge Estrada. A graduate of CUEC-UNAM. Screenwriter and filmmaker who was invited to the Berinale Talent Campus in 2006. He has published eight children's literature books. His directorial debut, La Revolución de Juan Escopeta, was nominated for the Ariel Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Workshop duration: Saturday, August 26, and September 2 and 9, from 12 to 3 p.m. at Cinestésica. Limited to 10 children between 8 and 12 years old. Information and registration at: www.cinestesica.com (abre en nueva pestaña)

El Santo, 100 Years Since His Birth

At Macabro, we will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of El Santo's birth with a screening of the film Santo y Blue Demon vs Doctor Frankenstein, directed by Miguel M. Delgado, presented on 35mm by Permanencia Voluntaria, a film archive and space for the promotion of Mexican cinema, located in Tepoztán, Morelos, and directed by Viviana García Besné
