#MacabroRecomienda: La posesión de Verónica

Paco Plaza, one of the creative duo behind the successful Spanish zombie saga, REC, is back on screens with the story of Verónica, a film that transitions from family melodrama to paranormal phenomenon with great skill.

The film tells the story of Verónica, a teenage girl who has to take care of her three younger siblings — her father has died and her mother works all day. Based on the only police report to record a paranormal phenomenon as the apparent cause of a crime in Madrid, Paco Plaza shows off his style with a narrative that draws us into the claustrophobia and desperation Verónica experiences in her domestic space, running back and forth down a hallway that divides and connects the different rooms where the poltergeist phenomenon unfolds — triggered by her own attempt to reach her father through a Ouija session.

Sandra Escacena stands out as Verónica, as do the children, Bruna González, Claudia Placer, and Iván Chavero, alongside the creature makeup that endangers their lives and whose appearances break the tension built up through incidental sounds and the score. Special mention goes to the use of "Maldito Duende" by the legendary Spanish rock band, Heroes del silencio, which not only makes a great introduction of the main character but also sets the story's timeframe in the early '90s.

La posesión de Verónica is a highly entertaining film for fans of classic horror, who will go home wondering whether what happened was the result of a paranormal phenomenon or the madness of a teenager trapped in a domestic drama.
