#MacabroTurístico: Hotel Posada del Sol

In the center of Mexico City lie the ruins of the Hotel Posada del Sol, a hotel said to be one of the most haunted sites in the city.

The decaying building was the great work of Fernando Saldaña Galván, who in the mid-20th century poured blood, sweat, and tears into creating a unique artistic space in Mexico City—a failed attempt to build one of the most extravagant hotels in the world.

Even though the Posada del Sol looks like ruins from the outside and holds little meaning for the vendors surrounding it, the interior reveals great beauty and historical significance. A combination of colonial Baroque architecture and decaying modernism, the hotel occupies more than half a city block, with gardens, courtyards, fountains, terraces, paintings, and elevated lookout points.

Construction was completely halted in early 1945. Due to external factors and mounting debt, Galván hanged himself in the hotel's courtyard. Legend has it that he cursed the hotel before taking his life, and that this is why it remains empty. One explanation holds that Galván lost his mind and murdered his family before the cultural center could open; others believe Galván ran into trouble with the Freemasons, and still others think the project was a front for satanic rituals.

One of the best-known mysteries of the abandoned building is a dimly lit room that houses an altar dedicated to a lost girl who was found dead in the hotel's basement and whose ghost haunts the place. Others leave candy on the girl's altar to escape her curse.
