#MacabroTurísticoVirtual: Explore the Catacombs of Paris and the Winchester Mansion

These days, several museums as well as historical and tourist sites have had to close their doors due to the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 epidemic; however, they are offering their visitors virtual tours of their spaces.

This presents a unique opportunity to visit these places from home. The offer has also reached those of us who are horror fans. Two of the most macabre and iconic dark-tourism destinations have opened their virtual tours to everyone.

1. The Catacombs of Paris.

This site is one of the most iconic and unsettling places in the French capital. Its origins date back to the 18th century, when, due to a public health problem, the decision was made to move the remains still lying in the cemeteries to an underground location. The authorities decided to move everything to a site that, at the time, was outside the city. The first remains arrived between 1785 and 1787, from the largest cemetery in Paris, the cemetery of the "Holy Innocents." The site became the Paris Municipal Ossuary in 1786. It is said that the remains of six million people now rest there.

2. The Winchester Mistery House

The mysterious Winchester mansion has stood for nearly 100 years as one of the architectural wonders of San Jose, California, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of the most famous haunted houses in the United States. This has made it one of the most visited tourist destinations; it is estimated that since 1923, more than 30 million people from around the world have walked through its lonely hallways, dark passageways, and ornate rooms.

The mansion takes its name from its former owner, Sarah Pardee Winchester, heir to her family's name and fortune, who also led a tragic life, having lost her daughter in childhood and her husband to tuberculosis.

Both the mansion and Sarah's story have inspired books and a film starring Helen Mirren in 2018.
