OPENING GALA

This year, our opening screening will present a great night of silent film and dark music, with a live scoring of one of horror cinema's great classics: The Phantom of the Opera by Rupert Julian (1925), starring Lon Chaney, presented by the band that pioneered and paved the way for the dark gothic movement in our country: “El Clan”.

As is now tradition, the venue for the meeting between Eric (The Phantom), “El Clan,” and Macabro will be the Teatro de la Ciudad “Esperanza Iris” (Donceles 36, Centro Histórico, CDMX), on Wednesday, August 21, in a free event.

The invitation is also extended to continue the celebration of the eighteenth edition's kickoff at BAR UTA (Donceles 58, Centro Histórico, CDMX).

EMERGING HORROR: SOFÍA CARRILLO

As it does every year, Macabro dedicates its section to emerging talent in horror and fantasy cinema from our country. Filmmakers such as Gigi Saul Guerrero and Abraham Sánchez, among others, have been recognized in this section.

This year, we dedicate this space to one of the most promising talents from our country: Sofía Carrillo, who has been recognized and has won animation awards at multiple festivals around the world, including FICG and FICM, the Havana Film Festival, and the San Diego Film Festival. Winner of two Ariel Awards for her short films Prita Noire (2013) and Cerulia (2017). Creator (Director and Animator) of the animated vignettes for the horror anthology “XX Pasión por el terror,” directed by Jovanka Vuckovic, Annie Clark, Roxanne Benjamin, and Karin Kusama (2017).
