MEXICO MACABRO 2025: RESCUING, REVISITING, AND REDEFINING MEXICAN HORROR CINEMA

September 11, 2025.- From September 19 to November 10 of this year, Macabro, Mexico City's International Horror Film Festival, will bring the Mexico Macabro lineup to five states across the Mexican Republic, featuring a curated selection of contemporary Mexican horror and fantasy cinema.

This traveling lineup will be made up of 15 feature films, 37 short films, 3 medium-length films, 2 short-film programs, 1 film-appreciation workshop, and 1 talk with directors. Some of the Mexican titles will include Alex Winter, Mírame, Guardado Hermano, La feria de los horrores, Rabia, and Muertamorfosis; plus two retrospectives: one on Emilio Portes and another called “Fantásticos del CCC,” featuring various standout works by graduates of this institution.

Naucalpan, Estado de México; Iztapalapa, Ciudad de México; Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato; Tehuacán and Puebla, Puebla; as well as Oaxaca and Zaachila, Oaxaca, will be the venues visited this year by the Mexico Macabro lineup.

Mexico Macabro: A Quarter Century Promoting and Rescuing National Horror Cinema

Since the festival's first edition in 2002, MACABRO has included the Mexico Macabro section in its lineup with the aim of promoting, rescuing, and revisiting titles from the fantasy and horror genre that are part of the national film heritage and identity—a heritage that has been partly forgotten—and that found, in the first instance, its core audience among fans of the genre, thereby uncovering the dark images and nightmares of our culture and society.

Over the years, what began as a simple section within the festival grew, over time, into the hallmark of all Mexican programming at every event, encompassing the screening of classics, Mexican films in the selection, director retrospectives, tributes, collaborations, book publishing, production support, seminars, interviews, and panel discussions, as well as promotion of genre rescues.

For this reason, this year Macabro is proud to bring the genre's most recent offerings to these five states of the Republic, with the sole aim of showcasing and bringing Mexican cinema closer to Mexican audiences, preserving the history of national cinema and rescuing its memory.
