Juan de los muertos earned its place in horror film history for being "officially" the first film of the genre in Cuba, a country where horror cinema had no place yet — even though Jorge Molina "Molinator," who has a role in the film, had already made several short films influenced by giallo cinema and the American slasher films of the 1980s. Macabro screened a program of his short films in 2009.
