Un fantástico terror, como jamás sentido había: Roger Corman, el rebelde del cine

Hay seres de otras dimensiones que parecen inmortales. Tal es el caso de Roger Corman quien, a sus 98 años, falleció el 9 de mayo del 2024. Uno de inmediato relaciona su nombre al cine de culto, al famoso ciclo de adaptaciones de Edgar Allan Poe junto a Vincent Price y a las escenas más kitsch del cine en el siglo XX. Pero él, era la encarnación del amor el cine y sin sus enseñanzas, viviríamos una industria totalmente distinta.

Guionista, productor, actor, director y distribuidor visionario que abrió las puertas del cine internacional para los estadounidenses, Corman entendió y adoptó la fascinación hacia el absurdo de los jóvenes, su principal audiencia en sus primeros años de productor. De bajo presupuesto pero enorme inventiva, las funciones dobles de los autocines se llenaron de monstruos surrealistas, carreras de autos llenas de acción, fieras motocicletas, hermosas mujeres, bandas sonoras y películas sobre rock. Un imaginario parodiado hasta en Los Simpsons con una supuesta versión suya de Titanic donde el barco intenta devorar a los sobrevivientes.

Coronado como el Rey del Cine B, a él le debemos clásicos totales de culto, sea bajo su dirección o en la producción: The Wild Angels, The Little Shop of Horrors, Forbidden World, Death Race 2000, Piranha, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, The Trip, The Saga of the Viking Women, Grand Theft Auto; una lista interminable que no muestra solo su visión cinematográfica, sino del semillero de colegas que estaba gestando.

Bajo su tutela, Corman adoptó a los futuros grandes de la industria: Coppola, Scorsese, Howard, Bogdanovich, Dante, Demme, Cameron y actores como Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, David Carradine, Dennis Hopper y Peter Fonda, le deben sus carreras.

Sin él, sin esa enseñanza de mantener un esquema de producción sencillo, no habría ocurrido el movimiento del Nuevo Hollywood durante la década de 1970. Sin temor a retratar los horrores de la noche, la perversión humana, el uso de psicodélicos y la creciente cultura biker, las enseñanzas de Corman llevaron a Hollywood a madurar. Bien lo dijo James Cameron: “yo estudié en la Escuela de Cine Roger Corman”.

Un héroe de la contracultura, la encarnación de la pasión por el cine, Corman nos acompañará siempre, como ese héroe que se mantuvo oculto en las sombras pero que sin él, viviríamos una historia muy distinta. Nada mal para haber empezado con la película de un mutante atómico.

Without fear of portraying the horrors of the night, human perversion, the use of psychedelics and the growing culture biker, Corman’s teachings led Hollywood to mature. James Cameron said it well: “I studied at the Roger Corman Film School.”

A hero of the counterculture, the embodiment of the passion for cinema, Corman will always accompany us, like that hero who remained hidden in the shadows but without him, we would live a very different story. Not bad to have started with a movie about an atomic mutant.
