Press Release: Navidades Macabras and Call for Entries 2016

CINEMA UNO AND MACABRO FICH PRESENT THE “NAVIDADES MACABRAS” CYCLE AND LAUNCH THE 2016 CALL FOR ENTRIES

• “Navidades Macabras” will screen from December 17 to 25 and includes films by directors Juan López Moctezuma and José Mojica Marins.
• Macabro FICH launches its call for entries to be part of the official selection for its 2016 edition, which will be available starting December 17 at www.macabro.mx

Mexico City, December 9, 2015. Cinema Uno and Macabro: Mexico City International Horror Film Festival are pleased to announce their alliance to launch the “Navidades Macabras” cycle, under the #MacabroRecomienda banner, which will stream on the Cinema Uno platform (www.cinemauno.com (abre en nueva pestaña)) from December 17 to 25 this year.

The lineup for the “Navidades Macabras” cycle includes three films from the Cinema Uno catalog: La mansión de la locura (1971), Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975) and Alucarda, la hija de las tinieblas (1978) by the cult Mexican director Juan López Moctezuma. Likewise, a collection of four films by the deranged master of Brazilian horror cinema, José Mojica Marins, will be released. Among them are: Delirios de un anormal (1978), A media noche me llevaré tu alma (1963), Esta noche reencarnaré en tu cuerpo (1966) and El despertar de la Bestia (1969).

Macabro FICH presented retrospectives of both directors in 2004 and 2007, respectively. The cycle will be accompanied by reviews written by Edna Campos Tenorio, the festival's general and artistic director, as well as video commentary from Edna Campos herself, filmmakers Laurette Flores and Carlos Meléndez, and Manuel Santillán Durán, star of the documentary Alucardos.

JUAN LÓPEZ MOCTEZUMA

Juan López Moctezuma is a director who found redemption long after his moment had passed, since his films differed greatly, both thematically and visually, from the national cinema of the 1970s—the decade in which he made his most important work. López Moctezuma's filmography was characterized by the influence of gothic literature, films from the legendary British Hammer studios, and Italian horror cinema. His films also show the influence of the panic movement led by Alejandro Jodorowsky, for whom he first worked as a producer. His filmography is highlighted by La mansión de la locura and Alucarda, the latter considered by critics and fans alike to be one of the most iconic and important films in Mexican horror cinema.

JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS

One of the strangest and most mind-bending directors horror cinema has ever given the world belongs to the bizarre world of Zé do Caxiao, the gravedigger, the alter ego of director José Mojica Marins, who in every film invites viewers to witness an orgy of horror, exploitation, and sexuality, plunging them into a world where Coffin Joe, as he's known in the United States, seizes bodies and souls while promising hell.

MACABRO – CINEMA UNO AWARD

Macabro FICH and Cinema Uno announce the creation of the Macabro – Cinema Uno award for best horror feature film, which consists of VOD distribution of the winning film through the Cinema Uno platform. Distribution terms and timing will be agreed upon with the winner.

2016 CALL FOR ENTRIES

Macabro FICH announces its call for entries to be part of the official selection of horror feature films, Mexican horror short films, and international horror short films for its 2016 edition, to be held from August 18 to 28 next year. It should be noted that films that do not meet the conditions to compete in the competition section may be considered for screening in the non-competitive sections. Starting with the 2016 edition, in addition to the Macabro – Cinema Uno, Macabro de Jade, and Macabro de Ónix awards, the festival will introduce the “Macabro Audience Award”. The call for entries and rules will be available on the official Macabro website starting December 17.

Also announced is the call for entries for the third edition of Macabro LAB, the Genre Works Development and Refinement Lab, which next year will keep its work in two categories: short film and feature film, the latter with the novelty of being divided into two working groups: screenplay and production. Macabro LAB will open a spot for a participant from another Latin American country.

Among the prizes Macabro LAB will award next year, one highlight is a direct invitation to take part in the pitching session of the Beyond the Window, to be held at the Latin American fantastic film market Blood Window in Buenos Aires, as part of the prestigious film market Ventana Sur, at the end of next year. This year, the entry submitted by Macabro FICH, Tatewarí by director Edgar Nito, was chosen as the contest winner.
