Official poster, venues, and witch hunt in the 25 years of MACABRO FICH

Mexico City.— MACABRO, Mexico City's International Horror Film Festival, marks its 25th anniversary. It will take place from August 12 to 23 this year at various venues across the Mexican capital and will raise the curtain at the Teatro de la Ciudad “Esperanza Iris” with Gaua, the multi-nominated film by Basque director Paul Urkijo at the 40th Goya Awards.

In addition to the opening film, which is spectacular in its own right, this quarter-century edition announces 19 physical venues in Mexico City and one digital venue, expanding the exhibition circuit over the event's 11-day run. Finally, MACABRO FICH presents El monstruo más grande, this year's official artwork celebrating 25 years of spreading, showcasing, promoting, and discussing horror cinema in Mexico.

Witch Hunt at the Opening

Directed by Paul Urkijo, the Spanish film Gaua will open the festivities for MACABRO's 25th anniversary. Set amid the witch hunts of 17th-century Basque Country, the film tells the story of Kattalin, a woman who flees into the forest after a life marked by oppression and violence, where she encounters legends filled with mythical creatures and fantastical lore.

Paul Urkijo is a Basque film director and screenwriter specializing in fantasy and folk horror cinema. In 2017, he made his directorial debut with his first feature, Errementari and later, in 2023, he released Irati, nominated at the Goya Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and at the Sitges Film Festival for Best Film; and in 2025 he releases Gaua, which was recently nominated in three categories at the Goya Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Special Effects.

Macabre venues

As is now tradition at MACABRO, various venues across Mexico City will host the line-up for this special anniversary edition, with the aim of bringing horror and fantasy cinema to an ever-wider audience. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the festival will feature 19 physical venues and one digital venue, consolidating one of the most important exhibition networks for the genre in the country.

Over these twenty-five years, these spaces have played a fundamental role in spreading horror cinema, becoming meeting points for creators, specialists, and audiences. Many of these venues have witnessed key moments in MACABRO's history and have accompanied the growth of a festival that, over two and a half decades, has decisively contributed to strengthening and gaining recognition for fantasy and horror cinema in Mexico.

Created by Roxana Deneb Ruiz and Diego Álvarez, the duo behind MACABRO's designs, this year's official artwork keeps the demonic aesthetic that characterizes the festival, only now surrounded by flames, monsters, beings, and demons dwelling in the deepest reaches of hell.

Twenty-five years after its founding, MACABRO celebrates a history built alongside filmmakers, specialists, and audiences who have made horror cinema much more than a genre: a space to explore our fears, imagine other worlds, and build community.
