Macabro presents a collection of short films that combine zombies, corrupt police officers, sadistic serial killers, possible futures in post-apocalyptic settings and deserts, heroes and heroines fighting drug traffickers and vampires alike—dark fantasy woven into everyday life, portraying the contemporary history of the border through the lens of horror cinema.

Abraham Sánchez, originally from the city of Tijuana, has been devoted to fantasy and horror cinema since 2005, and with just three short films put himself on the radar of genre cinema in Mexico thanks to his fantastical vision of everyday violence in northern Mexico. Winner of the Macabro de Jade short film award in 2013 and of post-production support at MACABRO Lab. In 2016, a program was presented for the first time as an early retrospective, along with the premiere of his medium-length film Devastación.

DEVASTACIÓN | 2015

Five years ago, a city was devastated by an infection of reanimated dead who spread the condition by biting the living, so it is now walled off and isolated from the rest of the world. A presumably immune survivor will try to escape the dangers of the post-apocalyptic society that coexists within the walls with these monsters in very peculiar and dangerous ways.

A mysterious masked man lives beside a rail line in a cabin that goes unnoticed by the area's residents, making it the perfect place to commit his murders and acts of cannibalism.

SANGUIJUELAS | 2012

Gabriel is a man seeking to avenge the death of his son at the hands of a group of vampires who stalk the city's residents by night; he now spends his nights hunting them. His thirst for vengeance will bring serious consequences for him and his wife.

Macabro Nocturno is a project of #MacabroFICH (abre en nueva pestaña) in partnership with La Casa del Cine Mx (abre en nueva pestaña) which has presented, every last Saturday of the month since February 2015, part of the festival's film archive dating back to its founding in 2002.
