#MacabroNocturno: Zombies on the Road

To warm up for the sixteenth edition of Macabro, we're pulling two highly significant films from the festival's history out of the archive. We start with the short film by the then up-and-coming director, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Meléndez, who recently won Best Director at Macabro XV for his first feature film, Histeria, while The Battery, the film that opened Macabro's 2013 edition, is considered one of the best zombie movies ever made.

Bestia. | Director: Carlos Meléndez. | Country: Mexico | Year: 2010 | Runtime: 17 min. Screening format: DVD. |

Synopsis: Tommy, Mickey, and Baby Joe are young people who epitomize the phrase “rebel without a cause,” driving at full speed in their car in search of fun at any cost. Along the way, they run into Víctor and Victoria, a strange couple who, in trying to help them, fall prey to a game of danger and torture. Tommy and his friends enjoy tormenting the couple, unaware of the secret they're really hiding.

The Battery | Director: Jeremy Gardner | United States | 2012 | 100 min | Blu-ray | English with Spanish subtitles

Synopsis: Two former baseball players, Ben and Mickey, set off on an aimless journey through a desolate New England. They stick to back roads and woods to stay clear of the shambling bodies patrolling the bustling cities and towns. To survive, they must overcome the stark differences in their personalities. Ben increasingly embraces the wild, lawless, nomadic lifestyle, while Mickey can't accept the harsh reality of this new world. Mickey refuses to take part in Ben's violent games and longs for the comforts he once had: a bed, a woman, and a safe place to live.
